| The Social Club is not just somewhere to go and enjoy a drink with friends. People may not be aware that it raises a lot of money for local charities, including B.A.S.H., the Day Centre, Buntingford Swimming Club,
which is totally sponsored by parents, and for children with learning difficulties (in conjunction with Layston School).
It also supports the Buntingford Carnival and, together with the North Herts Chopper Club, raises funds for the Macmillan Nurses. Monies raised by raffles etc. throughout the year are mainly organised by the excellent efforts of Mrs Jan Bradford, and others.
The Bar Steward's job has been shared over the years with Mr Dennis Beisser who has also been Secretary of the Club since 1981, with Mr Ron "Digger" Deards, Mrs Joyce Deards, Mrs Val Briers and at present with Mr Sean Fowler.
The Club at the moment has a membership of about 600, comprising a cross section of ages between 18 and 86. Live entertainment is a highlight of the club every Saturday evening, thanks to our Entertainment Officer,
with regular cabaret nights featuring well known artists.
The Club puts out teams involved in the local darts and pool league, and Bingo is held every Thursday, run by the members themselves. Each year an annual dinner is put on for the senior citizen members and a Christmas party is held for members' children.
In 1996 the Club had its 75th anniversary, with a week of celebrations including a visit from Eric Bristow.
New members to the Club have to be proposed by existing members. However, if you are new to the area and do not know anyone you are still welcome to drop in for a chat and have a look around. You may find there's a member there that you know who can sign you in as a guest for the evening.
